What To Wear To A Country Music Night You Do Not Need A Hat

WN7 FEST Team 6 October 2026 4 min read

Every country night has the same two groups in it. One has gone all in on the boots and the hat. The other has come straight from work. Both are having roughly the same evening, and nobody on the floor is auditing anybody.

The only thing that actually matters

Shoes. Not how they look, how they move. If there is dancing, you will be pivoting, and a stiff sole that grips the floor makes a quarter turn into a wrestle. Something with a smooth sole and a bit of give is worth more than anything else you put on.

Heels are fine if you are used to them, and genuinely awful if you are not.

Boots, if you want them

Western boots work because of what they do rather than how they look: a smooth sole, a low heel, and enough structure to hold your ankle through a turn.

If you own a pair, wear them. If you do not, it is not worth buying a pair for one night — they need breaking in, and a new pair over four hours is its own kind of misery.

Hats

A hat is a commitment. It is warm, it has to go somewhere when you are dancing, and in a crowd it is the first thing to get knocked. Plenty of people wear them and look great. Plenty more wear them for an hour and carry them for three.

The British weather clause

This matters more than any of the above. An outdoor evening event in June in the North West can be twenty-two degrees at six o'clock and eleven degrees by ten. Whatever you wear, bring a layer you do not mind carrying. The people who look most comfortable at the end of the night are the ones who brought a jacket.

What it actually looks like

Somewhere between a festival and a good night out. Jeans do a lot of work. Denim, checks and fringe turn up and look right; so do a plain shirt and a decent pair of trainers.

Country Music Day at WN7 FEST leans grown-up — it is an evening event rather than a daytime family one — but it is not a dress code, and nobody is turned away for not owning a single piece of western wear.
