Ella Langley And What A Number One Changed
It is worth being precise about what Ella Langley did, because the detail is the story.
The record
“Choosin' Texas” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay, and she became the first female artist to hold all three at the same time with one song. It came from her second album, Dandelion, and she co-wrote it.
How she got there
Langley was born in 1999 in Hope Hull, a rural suburb of Montgomery, Alabama. She moved to Nashville, gigged, and built an audience on the slower route — support tours and independent country platforms rather than a sudden break.
Her first widely heard song was “You Look Like You Love Me”, a duet with Riley Green, from her 2024 debut album Hungover.
Why the three charts matter
Hot Country Songs measures how a record performs within the genre. Country Airplay measures what country radio is playing. The Hot 100 measures everyone. Topping all three at once means the same song was simultaneously the biggest country record, the most-played country record on country radio, and the biggest record in America full stop. Those three things usually pull apart.
What it signals
For years the ceiling on a country record was the crossover: it could be huge in the genre and invisible outside it, or it could cross over by sounding less like country. A record doing both at once, without filing the edges off, says the ceiling has moved.
That is the wider shift behind a festival in Leigh putting a whole evening aside for country, rather than a slot.
